TF INFO

UNEP@50 TASKFORCE

“UNEP@50 Taskforce” (the Taskforce) is a youth-led working group initiated by Major Groups and Stakeholders, coordinated by the Science and Technology and the Children and Youth Major Groups.

The Taskforce is putting in place a broad consultation process for interested civil society organizations and representatives to identify relevant inputs feeding into the UNEP@50 commemoration.

Based on surveys and scientific 4 assessments, stakeholders are expected to develop an independent report expressing their own perspectives and expectations on the 50-year commemoration of UNEP, under the working title “The UNEP We Want”, expected to be available by the end of 2021 and launched at the culmination of the commemoration in February 2022.

THE UNEP WE WANT REPORT

With stock taking of environmental governance and youth engagement, the UNEP WE WANT coming down a memory lane of 50 years is one that will reflect and envision on its mandate of ‘leadership, science and solutions including climate change, the management of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and green economic development’.

The UNEP WE WANT highlights all the contributions and solution-driving actions on the three environmental crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution; which are at the heart of the Medium-Term Strategy (MTS).

In the context of building a resilient and inclusive post-pandemic world, the UNEP WE WANT tells a tale of inclusive youth engagements such as the Children and Youth Major Group and Science and Technology Major Group by charging Member States to deliver on their environmental obligations under international agreements.

The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of UNEP and the Stockholm 1972 UN Conference on Human Environment. As mandated in the UNEA 5.1 Strategic Plan, the UNEP@50 Task Force aims to maximize the participation of the stakeholders and civil society in the UNEP@50 commemoration through consultative processes and surveys.

The First session of the 18th AMCEN meeting; the 4th Forum of Ministers and-Environment Authorities of Asia Pacific; and the First Inter-Sessional Meeting of the LAC XXIII Forum of Ministers and the Environmental Peacebuilding Regional Consultations for Asia-Pacific Region have been some of the consultative and engagement processes in the lead up to UNEP@50 and feeding into the final report of the UNEP WE WANT later this year.
